The Stage Taught Me to Trust Flow

Music is my portal to understanding creation. For decades I have been chasing the moment when the music takes over and I disappear completely, and I find it on stage with The Mountain Jam Band, when the keyboard becomes an extension of something larger than myself. Years later I found that same state of consciousness described in the pages of quantum physics.

The last time I chased that moment with my close friend, we played under the stars on a Friday night in 2017, and he was gone by morning. His song is our band’s signature now, and I play it every weekend.

I Had to Own All of It

I spent nearly thirty years leading businesses, more than twenty in digital healthcare and pharma, and built three digital agencies from the ground up. Today I lead FAS Solutions, where I work with life sciences companies and founders as a consultant and fractional executive.

For years I told a story from college as a funny story about people power: five hundred students, ninety minutes, and a wheelchair ramp for a classmate who could not get into his music class. Decades later I saw what that day had actually shown me. When people align around a vision, they create together what none of them could create alone, and whoever leads them shapes what gets built.

Once I saw that, I couldn’t blame circumstances anymore. I’d been creating my reality unconsciously all along without knowing it, and now I had to take responsibility for all of it. That is how I lead now, and it is what I bring to every team I work with.

What I Tell My Children

My son Christopher is studying data science and building AI in a world where AI is erasing the entry-level jobs beneath him. My daughter Chloe held one vision for years: veterinary school. She gave up softball for it, did the work it demanded, and got into two of the top five veterinary schools in the United States.

I cannot shield them from the unknown, so I teach them to create within it. And I remind them of the thing most of the AI conversation misses: these systems are learning from all of us, every day. Whatever we are, AI is learning to become.

About Frank Saia

Frank Saia is a writer, speaker, and the CEO of FAS Solutions, where he works with life sciences companies and founders as a consultant and fractional executive. He spent nearly thirty years leading businesses, most of them in digital healthcare and pharma, built three digital agencies from the ground up, and served seven years as Board Chairman of a startup charter high school in East Harlem, from its founding through its first graduating class. One of his agencies ranked highest in employee satisfaction among 175 companies in an anonymous survey of Omnicom’s largest division, which he considers the proof of everything he believes about leading from love instead of fear. With his wife, Tracey Saia, LPAT, MS, ATR-BC, ATCS, a licensed, board-certified art therapist, he leads workshops that help people find and rewrite the beliefs quietly shaping their lives.

Frank had epilepsy from the age of five, and he learned early that if the wrong people knew, he would be sorted and labeled before anyone knew him. So he figured out how to fit in, and over five decades he built walls one at a time, putting away a little more of himself behind each one. In 2017 his close friend died hours after they played music together under the stars, and over the years that followed, Frank slowly took the walls down. We Are Gods: Awakening the Creator Within is the account of how the walls went up, what he found when they came down, and the responsibility that came with seeing he had been creating his life all along.

When he’s not writing, Frank plays keyboards in The Mountain Jam Band, an Allman Brothers tribute, hikes with his dog Luke in Jockey Hollow, and explores the national parks with his family. He lives in Morristown, New Jersey, with his wife Tracey and their two adult children.
